Antico Borgo Reale - Centro Commerciale NaturaleLivorno
LIVORNO, PISA, VERSILIA
Borgo Reale was the name for the beautiful, grand suburbs that were found outside the Medici walls, flanked by tall buildings and full of artisan boutiques and fruit shops, grocers, bakeries, inns, osterias and post offices. This is where the Antico Borgo Reale Natural Shopping Centre was born in 2016, with the aim of livening up the districts now called Garibaldi and Pontino San Marco, restoring the ancient vocation of a place of transit, small trade and quality craftsmanship. In collaboration with the district committees Love Pontino and Vivigaribaldi, citizens and traders, driven by the desire to regain their public spaces and redevelop an urban context of great historical and landscape value, are experimenting with a participatory set-up based on bottom-up initiatives.
With the help of public funding, buildings that have been vacant for years are reopening on the alleyways around the characteristic Piazza Garibaldi and along the Fosso Reale that embraces the Fortezza Nuova and once surrounded the entire walled city: art galleries, second hand books, second hand shops and typical local cuisine. In this stunning nocturnal setting, in summer historic rowing races, shows and markets take place. A major urban regeneration movement just waiting to be discovered as you explore the district on several levels: the streets and squares, the Fosso Reale waterway and the quayside that overlooks it, with the cellars of shipwrights, fishermen and rowers, connected to the road by the typical stone-paved connecting ramps, known as “scalandroni”.
