AREA DEL PARCO DI PORTOFINO
Once upon a time there was a just a handful of sailors, like those only seen in story books now, who ploughed the oceans on cargo ships and transatlantic ships with tattooed biceps and a woman awaiting them in each port. Those crude seafarers abandoned their ships and settled in their birth-towns and, when the first tourists arrived in the Riviera, decided to take them on tours discovering the beauties of the Tigullio Gulf on their little fishing boats.
The idea was immediately popular and soon slightly larger boats arrived, rigged out and steered by those picturesque and cantankerous men who nonetheless were so enterprising as to start working together and building new boats in order to offer a better service and take on more passengers. Today’s boatmen are the descendants of those old watermen who throughout the ’50s travelled to Portofino and San Fruttuoso to offer adventurous trips to the Cinque Terre.
Today, the Tigullio Maritime Service owns nine boats ranging from 18 to 31 metres in length, with a capacity to seat between 130 and 140 passengers; from classic, comfortable wooden boats to the most modern fibreglass boats in varying sizes, powered by new generation propellers for good cruising speeds which can therefore easily reach even quite distant destinations.
As well as excursions along the Eastern Riviera, the company also organises tastings of Ligurian products while on-board and their boats are also available for events and birthdays.
